A fantastic trip into centuries gone by

The Morelos Monasteries Route takes you on a whirlwind tour of 11 majestic former monasteries that hug the volcanoes, reach for the skies and cry out like history itself.

Tepoztlán

Tepoztlán, located in the heart of the state of Morelos, received its designation as a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) on June 24, 2010.

At the top of the hill lies the archaeological site of El Tepozteco, and at its base, the Ex-Convent of the Nativity, a 16th-century gem built by Dominican friars. In 1994, it was included on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List as part of the group "The First Monasteries of the 16th Century on the Slopes of Popocatépetl", recognized for its blend of architectural and cultural styles.

Tepoztlán’s rich culture is also reflected in its vibrant local market, the Carlos Pellicer Museum, its famous Carnival celebration, and a gastronomy that delights with itacates, red and green moles, tamales wrapped in corn husks, and the traditional sopa de milpa. Adding to this are its colorful handicrafts, including miniature houses carved from pochote wood, teponaztles (percussion instruments), traditional cera escamada candle-making, gourd (guaje) crafts, and the distinctive rain stick, all of which capture the ancestral essence of this magical place.
