Panteón San José El antiguo Cementerio Español
The Panteón San José, also known as the Antiguo Cementerio Español, is one of the most emblematic historical sites in El Rosario. Built during the mining boom in the 19th century, it was the resting place for important Spanish figures and wealthy families who were attracted by the mining wealth.
Its architecture reflects a European funerary style with mausoleums, sculptures, and quarry stone tombs, making it a space of great cultural and patrimonial value. Furthermore, it represents a testimony to the foreign influence on the economic and social development of the municipality.
It is one of the mystical places of the city, with a solemn and dramatic air that enhances its charm. It features a distinguished facade of Spanish Neoclassical style, which gives reason to the name Panteón Español built by Ignacio Fletes, a prelude to the astonishing tombs inside, most of them from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century. Stone monuments, coats of arms, sculptures of mourning angels, and other expressions of funerary art make up the place.
