Ponche, Bread, and Coffee Fair
Every year, in the picturesque Magic Town of Comala, Colima, the Ponche, Bread and Coffee Fair takes place, bringing together gastronomy, local traditions, and a warm family-friendly atmosphere. From April 11 to 27, this festival welcomes national and international visitors to experience authentic flavors, artistic activities, and the hospitality of a community proud of its heritage.
Withmore than twenty years of history, the fair has become an emblematic celebration during Holy Week and Easter. Since its beginnings in 2002, the event has preserved its essence: offeringhandcrafted ponche, traditional bread, and high-altitude coffee in a vibrant cultural setting.
The heart of the festival beats in Comala’s main square, where more than150 exhibitorsshowcase their products, while around50 cultural groupsbring music, dance, theater, and art to life. Highlights of the program include the traditional coronation of the festival queen, folkloric ballet performances, theatrical plays, and artistic exhibitions that reflect the region’s cultural richness.
The culinary stars are unforgettable:artisanal ponche, prepared with fruits, grains, and pure sugarcane alcohol, or with variations such as fresh milk, mezcal, ortuxca, in flavors like cranberry, guayabilla, tamarind, caramel, pistachio, and more; thetraditional bread, especially the famouspiconesandconchas, recipes passed down from generation to generation; and thehigh-altitude coffee from Comala, grown in volcanic soils, harvested by hand, and cultivated under shade, which gives it a distinctive character.
Visiting this fair is also the perfect opportunity to explore Comala’s treasures: the San Miguel Arcángel Parish, the Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo Museum, La Nogalera, the Carrizalillos and La María lagoons, and the impressive Colima Volcano.
