Capilla del Carmen

Capilla del Carmen

Capilla del Carmen

The Capilla del Carmen is considered the first mission founded in Concordia, established in the year 1594, although it was practically destroyed and today only some walls remain as vestiges of its existence.

According to Professor Agustín Velázquez Soto of the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, the current construction of the chapel dates approximately between 1817 and 1825.

There are also sources that estimate its construction was carried out around 1740, and that it was built withcanterabrought from Guadalajara and Querétaro, with a distinctive Baroque style and cedar wood floors (which were preserved for about two centuries).

The chapel was restored in 1965, thanks to the efforts of the Concordia community, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Villa de San Sebastián, thus returning the dwelling to the Santísima Virgen del Carmen of the town. Fray Pablo de Acevedo built the Capilla del Carmen next to the place known as the "Casa de Piedra".
