Teatro el Galeón

Teatro El Galeón is a historic theater within the Centro Cultural del Bosque. It was actually renamed for one of its founders, the outstanding playwright, acting teacher and theater director, Abraham Oceransky, in 2018. The theater began with students from the School of Theatrical Art and the Academy of Dance of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL). The theater was the final installation within the broader performance complez. In the early 1970s, young theater students began using the warehouses of the former Unidad Artística y Cultural del Bosque for rehearsals. They eventually collaborated with architect Carlos Perdomo to build a new space called the Laboratorio Teatral Foro Independiente. They soon had classes going under the direction of César Pérez Soto. The theater itself opened in 1972. Abraham Oceransky Quintero (1943 - ) began his theater career upon graduating from the National Theater School (ENAT) in 1967. He went on to direct more than 80 plays as well as television productions throughout the 1970s. He went on to write some 16 plays and built or adapted multiple theatrical spaces. He's taught directing and acting workshops in Mexico and abroad and won the National Arts and Literature Award in 2019. Today the 50+ year old stage is one of the most applauded in Mexico City. It was entirely restored in 2000, but since then has remained in constant use as theater-goers' demands have only increased over its many years.
