El Monumento a la Independencia (Ángel de la Independencia)

The Monument to Independence, commonly known as El Ángel (The Angel), is one of the most iconic landmarks in Mexico City and a must-see for anyone visiting the capital. Located on Paseo de la Reforma, this majestic monument combines history, art, and national pride, commemorating Mexico’s fight for independence. Commissioned by President Porfirio Díaz, its construction began in 1902 and it was officially inaugurated on September 16, 1910, during the centennial celebrations of Mexico’s independence. In 1925, it also became a mausoleum, housing the remains of independence heroes such as Miguel Hidalgo, José María Morelos, Vicente Guerrero, Leona Vicario, and others.

The monument is built in the classical Corinthian style and stands approximately 36 meters tall. It is topped by a gilded bronze sculpture known as the Winged Victory, created by sculptor Enrique Alciati. The figure holds a laurel wreath in her right hand, symbolizing triumph, and a broken chain in her left, representing the end of colonial rule. At the base of the monument are sculptures representing law, war, justice, and peace. One particularly striking image shows a lion being led by a child, symbolizing the strength and peaceful nature of the Mexican people.

Inside the monument, a spiral staircase of about 200 steps leads to a small viewing platform, although public access is restricted at times. Over the years, El Ángel has undergone restorations following various earthquakes, including the one in 1957 when the main statue fell and was carefully repaired. Beyond its historical and artistic value, El Ángel is also a place for gatherings: it is where sports victories are celebrated, social movements take shape, and national holidays are honored. It remains an unmissable point of reference in the city, often photographed and visited by travelers from around the world.
