TopChe Center in Lacanja Chansayab

A dramatic mountain escape hosted entirely by locals in one of the world's most precious and protected natural landscapes.

TopChe Center in Lacanja Chansayab

The TopChe Center in Lacanjá Chansayab remains one of the best ways to experience the Lacandon Jungle high in the mountains of Chiapas. The Center is at home in a small town that is also home to several small, sustainable camps and eco-centers. They offer sustainable vacations that help to conserve the rather delicated environment of the upper jungle.

Visits are guided by Lacandon families trained in rafting, hiking, and craftsmanship. It's fantastic mountain and jungle country, and while stays here are richly rewarded, people tend to arrive in small groups or as couples. But as a natural retreat, one couldn't hope for a more scenic and dynamic landscape. Artisan workshops introduce the manufacture of arrows, dream catchers, and traditional jewelry among many other craft items that can be seen within the workshops area.

But lots of guests will insist upon rafting into the heart of the Lacanjá River valleys. Guided tours let guests explore jungle trails leading to waterfalls and archaeological sites. The local people are happy to help you explore wildlife from deep inside the jungles but respect for the area's deep cultural traditions is a must.

Accommodations are well above the standards of wooden cabins. As the place is so remote, visitors want to stay for a few days or even longer. There's a lot to explore, and the small village of Lacanjá Chansayab is big enough that you don't feel completely isolated.

The drive from Palenque to the TopChe Center takes just under two hours. Some travelers will want to arrive to Palenque via either Mexicana Air, or on the Tren Maya or the Interoceanic Train. Due to the mountains and protected jungle, there are no direct routes west to Comitán. This is serious jungle territory and doesn't have much public transportation, other than cooperatives operating between the few small population centers.
