Laguna Nahá
One of the most extraordinary mountain jungle lodges is on the banks of a deep lake the likes of which draws visitors back year upon year for the sheer experience of here being at last quite alive.
Laguna Nahá is located high in the mountains of the vibrant Lacandon Jungle, just outside the small village of Nahá-Metzabok, in the easternmost part of Chiapas. The Nahá Jungle Lodge is a magnificent rural getaway run by locals and open to people from all over the world. The community is almost entirely devoted to welcoming guests, sharing with them the secrets and revelations of the jungle, and providing them with safe passage among the trees, valleys, and mountains.
Lake Nahá, just a few minutes' walk from the village, offers a wide open space for canoeing. The surrounding area is one of the best hiking areas on the planet. Guests enjoy guided walks through the primary rainforest. They can learn about centuries-old trees, medicinal plants, and many birds that only live here. The Nahá Lagoon and nearby Laguna Amarilla are part of the larger Metzabok Protected Wildlife Area.
Community tourism is not just a concept here. It's the living reality of the 21 families of Nahá. They transformed the way they occupy the land to make their way of life sustainable and to serve as an example to the rest of the world. They collect rainwater, treat wastewater, rely on solar energy, and continuously train themselves in improvements that they can offer to visitors. The exceptional natural environment keeps visitors coming back.
Guests try their hand at archery, watch the owls, admire the work of local painter Kayum Maax, or just spend time by any of the numerous lakes and lagoons. Hiking the Hoch Há trail is said to be the most challenging and rewarding in the area.
Getting to Nahá Jungle Lodge from Palenque is part of the adventure. In Palenque, a bus marked Pajchiltic leaves from the Aexa bus station. If traveling by car, keep in mind that some roads are unpaved or in poor condition. The trip usually takes just under three hours.
