Suchitlán, Comala

Suchitlán, whose name means “place of flowers” in Nahuatl, is a charming village located about 20 minutes from Comala, nestled on the slopes of the Colima Volcano. Its mystical, ancestral atmosphere makes it a top destination for lovers of culture, nature, and authentic flavors.

The local cuisine of Suchitlán reflects its indigenous heritage with traditional dishes made from local ingredients. Highlighted dishes include tatemado rabbit, a stew of rabbit cooked with chilies and spices, as well as colimote tamales and Colima-style sopitos. Freshly roasted artisan coffee and regional drinks like pomegranate punch and tejuino complete the culinary journey.

Suchitlán’s natural surroundings are perfect for hiking and photography. The Suchitlán River Ravine, featuring a scenic hanging bridge, offers breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere. Nearby, the Laguna de Carrizalillos, surrounded by lush vegetation and wildlife, provides an ideal setting for a picnic, kayaking, or simply unwinding by the lakeshore.

The community maintains a strong cultural and spiritual heritage. Known as the “town of healers,” local curanderos still perform traditional healing ceremonies using sacred plants. Their most iconic art is the handcrafted wooden masks, used in ritual dances such as “Los Morenos,” Carnival, and religious festivities. Traditional charro-taurine and religious festivals from January to February feature live music bands and folkloric expression.

A key event is the Festival de los Paspaques, held annually during the nine days leading up to Shrove Tuesday (Carnival Tuesday). The festival blends music, food, traditional dances, crafts, and cultural activities for all ages. It celebrates indigenous heritage and strengthens community identity, honoring memory, land, and the living roots of Suchitlán.

Wander through cobblestone streets lined with terracotta-roofed houses and colorful gardens, taste local dishes, join in ancestral festivals, and immerse yourself in serene natural landscapes. Suchitlán is not just a place to visit—it’s a deep cultural experience.
