Kanxoc Embroidery
The most extraordinary embroidery workshop in the Valladolid area, this one gives you the color, the vibe, and the very personality of one of Yucatan's most creative communities - and all in an afternoon or so.
Kanxoc is a wonderful little town of some 4,300 people just southeast of Valladolid. From the Valladolid town center, it's perhaps 25 minutes, and roughly 30 minutes from the Tren Maya station that sits exactly at the north of town.
The entire state of Yucatan has long been famous for embroidery - intricate, mouth-watering in its color, and fantastic to behold. Visitors can learn more about the traditional embroidery technique, by hand or using one of the sewing machines on site at the Kanxoc Communidad facility within the village. You can also get a start in whats going on by starting with a guided tour of the village. One of the most Mayan-language-speaking towns in the state, you'll still learn its history, the traditional architecture, and the daily life of the people living here. The preliminary tour gives visitors a way to contextualize the extraordinary embroidery that fits right in with the cultural richness of the place. Its value as artistic expression and as for making heritage pieces passed down over many generations has never made more sense.
Visitors are welcomed into the artisans' home-workshop. It's an intimate space where you can learn the basic processes involved in embroidery and the creation of textiles and jewelry. Past participants have made blouses, tablecloths, bags, and decorative accessories. But it's still more than just a technical workshop. A visit becomes a cultural encounter to promote respect and appreciation for the sheer craftsmanship involved. Time gets invested in every stitch, and symbolism goes into every design. Past participants have left with embroidered jeans and jackets, gift bags, clothing, and all kind of smaller works. As an opportunity to connect with Yucatan textile art, you get to take home a little piece of the soul of the place. And that makes it something you will never forget.
