Cenote X-Canché
A famous community project to present one of the most lush and enchanting (and deepest) of cenotes to a wider public. What you get is practically, poetically, in-describable.
The Cenote X-Canché is a fantastic spot in the heart of the jungle of Hunukú in Yucatán. The project was begun in 2002 by a group of local community members to transform what was already a mystical and historic cenote into a sustainable attraction for visitors. Today it serves as an example of community conservation across the region.
The site is located just three kilometers from the modern village of Ekbalam and 1.5 kilometers from the Ekbalam archaeological site. But the experience at Cenote Xcanché is one total immersion within nature and adventure. Guests arrive on foot or by renting bikes or trikes for two to cover the 1.5-kilometer trail. The voyage is incredible.
The semi-open cenote awaits guests with a circle of water some 40 meters across. Guests can jump right in or try rappelling or zip-lining out to the middle!
The surrounding park has a cozy area with hammocks for relaxing and a restaurant serving great regional food. Any visit to the Cenote X-canché is complemented by a visit to the ancient Ek Balam site. The Acropolis pyramid, ceremonial buildings, ball court, and the surrounding wall make it a fascinating site and one that provides all kinds of insight into life in the village, even since ancient times.
Most guests will get to the site via Ekbalam and after a trip to Valladolid. The Tren Maya station there is just about half an hour to the south of the X-canché site. The city of Valladolid is just a little to the south of the station.
