Nohoch Actun

Nohoch Actun is an ecotourism park just outside of X-can in Yucatan. It's one of the principle attractions in the little town which is itself experiencing something of a re-birth due to its proximity to the Tren Maya station at Nuevo X-can, just across the border in Quintana Roo.

People arrive to the park for two main attractions: an underground cave system some 300 meters in length, and a closed and beloved cenote called Kalotjool. Guests are spellbound by the geological formations on the floors and walls of the cave: stalagmites, stalactites, and stones with incredible mineral concentrations. These shine and change color in any quality of light. The space is not only visually stunning, but a window into the natural processes that have taken place over thousands of years.

The cenote is an underground body of crystal clear that lends to the mystical atmosphere. To reach the cenote, guests need to descend some 18 meters, by rappelling or on a suspended ladder with a harness to keep everybody safe. At the bottom an island is entirely surrounded by water of varying depths. Shallow areas are safe even for kids.

The park also includes areas for hiking on extensive nature trails through the surrounding jungle. Guests take in the fresh air and birdsong, and it's all just a few minutes from the train. The Nuevo X-can station of the Tren Maya is about 15 minutes away. The little town of X-can is even closer. From Chemax, the local municipal seat, the trip takes about 30 minutes, and from Valladolid, it's just about an hour to the Cenotes and Caves eco-park.
