X-Can

A remarkable Maya town of cenotes and mysterious encroaching jungle, you couldn't be further from every experience your life, but it's a fantastic place to discover.

X-Can

X-Can is a charming little town in the east of Yucatán, and put newly on the map because just across the border in Quintana Roo is the Tren Maya station for the town of Nuevo Xcán. With just seven kms between them, people use the station for both towns, and in both cases, the town name comes from the Yucatec Maya word for place (x) of snakes (can).

The town is overwhelmingly visited as a first stop en route to the area's many cenotes. Surrounded by lush jungle, dirt roads, and traditional villages, X-Can is a first and very good place to stop on the way to any of them. Most residents speak the Maya language, but Spanish is widely understood. X-Can will meet the needs of travelers with access to most basic services. There is also a central park, and growing access to the alternative and sustainable tourism that welcomes visitors into the surrounding countryside.

X-Can is close to the Choj Ha cenote and the Nohoch Actun cenote and cave system, both of which offer unique tours and a chance to swim and relax in the countryside and the surrounding ecological visitors' centers. The Cenote Sac ha is right in the little town and visitors to the center will almost certainly receive an invitation to visit.

Local vendors split their time meeting guests between the stations at Nuevo Xcán and the next nearest station at Valladolid. Valladolid is a further hour driving to the west, but as it's a much bigger city, it attracts that many more passengers. Visitors to Nuevo Xcán may be heading north or south, still in Quintana Roo. But on this side of the border, X-can offers a colonial-era town center, and lots to eat. Accommodations, at this writing, are mostly a bit further afield in the direction of the attractions toward which providers and promoters will be inviting you.
