Gruta Chocantes
Simply as adventurous as it gets in Tekax, take off for the underground cave system and take in the entire surrounding landscape on the same cool, comfortable trip.
The Grutas Chocantes are a system of caves on the southwest side of the famous city of Tekax. The site is surrounded by small natural elevations, but below lies a whole hidden world: an underground system of natural rock formations, part of the karst shelf on which most of the Yucatan peninsula rest. The geological structure, mostly of limestone, was shaped over millions of years as water reacts with that limestone. Unique and fascinating underground landscapes are the result—and for those seeking adventure and a "deep" connection with nature, there's no better place for it.
The Gruta del Toro is one of the biggest on this side of Tekax. And the Chocantes staff will be happy to escort you to some of its deepest recesses. But above ground, there is an entire complex to help you get more out of the experience. A zipline lets you see some of the best of Tekax from well up above. There are also services to support rappeling into the caves and surrounding canyons. There's also plenty of space for relaxing, or hiking off into the surrounding jungle.
From the center of Tekax, the trip to the caves is just a few minutes. Many guests will explore here or in a number of similar surrounding cave trips and above-ground jungle adventure sites in the immediate area. This often takes place a day or two after arriving to the wonderful little town that is, itself, worth a good day exploring.
