Teatro Hidalgo: The Cultural Heartbeat of Colima

Discover Teatro Hidalgo, a neo-Gothic gem inaugurated in 1883 and now Colima’s artistic hub, where concerts, dance, and theater flourish in a space that has survived earthquakes and been reborn with new life.

Where musical history comes alive today, in front of the historic downtown.

Teatro Hidalgo, located in the heart of downtown Colima, invites both national and international visitors to discover the cultural soul of the state. With its elegant neo-Gothic façade, horseshoe-shaped balconies, and seating capacity for 652 spectators, this venue embodies both history and innovation. Today, it hosts theater plays, concerts, dance performances, festivals, conferences, and a wide variety of cultural events for all audiences.

The theater’s history is remarkable: construction began in 1873 under the design of Lucio Uribe, and it was inaugurated on September 15, 1883, originally named in honor of Father Miguel Hidalgo. In its early years, it welcomed European zarzuelas and high-quality stage productions. Over time, due to earthquakes and natural deterioration, the building collapsed and was repurposed for boxing matches, wrestling, and even bullfights. It was later restored and reopened in 1961. During the 1990s and beyond, it underwent modernization, with upgrades to lighting, sound, seating, dressing rooms, and technical infrastructure, supported by international donations and cultural initiatives. Today, it is considered one of the most beautiful theaters in Mexico and the most important cultural venue in Colima.

When visiting Colima, experiencing Teatro Hidalgo is a must: enjoy a local play, an intimate concert, or a cultural event while immersing yourself in an atmosphere where 19th-century aesthetics meet modern stage technology. Come alone, with a partner, or in a group—step into a world where art transcends time.
