The Grutas de San Gabriel

A natural experience to discover and enjoy in Colima

The Grutas de San Gabriel

The Grutas de San Gabriel, in the municipality of Ixtlahuacán, Colima, are one of those natural treasures that blend adventure, history, and wonder. Discovered and protected by the local community, these caves have been visited for decades by explorers and nature lovers, becoming a symbol of the natural heritage of southern Colima.

To get there, access is by private vehicle from the town of Ixtlahuacán, following rural roads and dirt paths, so caution is recommended. Entry is accompanied by local guides, which is mandatory to ensure safety and site conservation. The cost is approximately $200 pesos per vehicle, and visiting hours are usually 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though they may vary by season.

Inside the caves, you’ll find rock formations, stalactites, stalagmites, large caverns, and a cool, mysterious atmosphere that makes you feel small before the greatness of nature. The experience is ideal for those seeking ecotourism, adventure, and a connection with the earth; walking through its passages sparks awe, respect, and a deep sense of exploration, as if entering a hidden world beneath Colima.
