Santuario Piedra Herrada, Mariposa Monarca
Be still and listen to the fluttering of Monarch butterflies amidst the pines, firs, and oaks. Admire their black, brown, and orange hues. Experience the sighting of this magnificent insect in the Estado de México.
It is one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the Estado de México, located in the municipality of Temascaltepec.
This fir and pine forest, at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, is home to numerous Monarch butterfly colonies that migrate from Canada and the United States to overwinter here, filling the landscape with orange and black hues from their wings.
It is a natural spectacle unparalleled in the world, and interestingly, the Sanctuary receives visitors not only from Mexico but also from countries like Japan and Colombia, who come to witness this wonder.
The sanctuary also boasts a wealth of flora and fauna across its thousands of hectares.
The viewing season runs from November to March.
