Pulque Museum

The soul of pulque in a historic hacienda

Pulque Museum

The museum preserves calendars, bottles, old posters and photographs that show the social and economic importance of this drink on the plateau. Visitors learn to distinguish aguamiel from pulque and can participate in workshops to scrape the maguey with the acocote. The building, with stone walls and wooden beams, dates from the 16th century and houses restored rooms that recreate the atmosphere of pulque haciendas in Tlaxcala

On weekends there are also guided tastings with experts and cultural events such as dance and regional music performances. Beyond the exhibits, the museum organises tastings of curados flavoured with unusual ingredients like pine nut and celery, and workshops teaching how to ferment aguamiel. The tinacal architecture preserves brick vaults and thick adobe walls that keep the space cool. Information panels describe the ceremonial role of pulque in agricultural festivals and its evolution into an everyday drink.
