Casa Museo Carlos Pellicer Cámara

A quiet museum and reflection off the crooked central streets of Villahermosa, it's a house museum devoted to one of Tabasco's most important men of letters.

Casa Museo Carlos Pellicer Cámara

The Casa Museo Carlos Pellicer Cámara is a terrific small museum in the crooked streets of inner Villahermosa. The site is the birthplace of the famed poet, statesman, and museum designer and promoter. He's likely most famous for having led the Museo de Tabasco just a few minutes walk to the south on the Plaza de Armas. That museum was rededicated, also to Pellicer, in 1980 just three years after his death. Today the Carlos Pellicer Regional Museum of Anthropology is the most important museum in the city.

But here, we get a nuanced look in the life of the man who worked basically his whole life, not just for the anthropology and staggering importance of the cultures and people of the city. He was also a man of letters, devoted to literature and the arts. The home where he was born dates from the same period as his birth in the late 19th century. It later came to house the Tabasco State Department of Education but it remains a typical Tabasco residential home from the period.

Four exhibition galleries present his life and work through photographs, documents, books, personal belongings, clothing, furniture, and objects from his day to day life. One of them even famously recreates the makeshift bedroom he occupied within the old Museo de Tabasco, when he had no where else to sleep. It's a quiet and curious depiction of the man who was perhaps the state's most famous citizen during his lifetime.

It's a quiet historical museum dedicated to a gargantuan figure in the city, and the whole country. It's also a nice respite from the surrounding streets and alleys. People often visit after taking in some of the more energetic sites in the area, not least the Plaza de Armas itself. Walking distance from both the Pajaritos and Juarez parks, it's an informative and enriching stop for anyone visiting the Tabasco capital region.
