Archaeological Zone of Cholula (Tlachihualtépetl)
The Archaeological Zone of Cholula is one of Mexico’s most important historical treasures. The Great Pyramid, known in Nahuatl as Tlachihualtépetl (“man-made hill”), is the largest pyramid by volume in the world, surpassing even those of Egypt. Although it looks like a natural hill, it is a massive structure built in multiple stages by different cultures over more than a thousand years.
A visit to the site includes underground tunnels that reveal construction phases, ceremonial courtyards, pre-Hispanic murals, and remains of temples dedicated to deities such as Quetzalcóatl. Outside, visitors walk through plazas and platforms that formed the political and religious center of ancient Cholula, once one of Mesoamerica’s largest cities.
Complemented by explanatory panels and certified guides, the site offers a powerful journey into the past and a unique contrast with the colonial sanctuary that crowns the pyramid.
