Mineral del Monte

A dramatic old mining town in the mountains of Hidalgo

Mineral del Monte

Mineral del Monte is one of the least known of the high mountain mining towns outside of Pachuca although people generally pass through en route to nearby, and better-known, Omitlán de Juárez. Together with Mineral del Chico, also nearby, these towns make up some of the most important overnight points in the entire Comarca Minera Geopark.

Also known as Real del Monte, the town is famous for its crooked streets and perching mountaintop homes. The valleys hold onto clouds to just that point where you\'d wished you\'d come sooner, younger, more full of life. It\'s a reflective town and one where everyone who visits leaves knowing themselves a little better.

With just about 15,000 permanent residents, it\'s also a little bigger than the other famous mining towns in the area. Visitors get access to the Museo de Sitio Mina de Acosta which preserves an actual mine shaft. The Museo del Paste highlights the influence of the English miners who\'s local pastries are still the highlight of lunch here. There\'s even an English graveyard dedicated to the old miners who lived and died here. The Dificultad Mine takes up the subject in earnest.

Mineral del Monte is also center stage for the Bosque el Hiloche State Park. It butts up against the mountain that makes up most of this side of town, and visitors take to the El Hiloche mineworks here. They\'re just beyond the  Plaza Purisima Real Del Monte viewing platform where views are incredible.
