Omitlán de Juárez is a quaint old mining town, just northeast of the Hidalgo state capital at Pachuca. It\'s often visited together with its sister city of Mineral Del Monte, and the two towns share similar cloudy, cool, and mysterious mountain climates.
These two towns are likely the best-known of the nine-municipality-wide Comarca Minera Geopark which is recognized by UNESCO. It\'s main point is to highlight the area\'s history of geology, mining, and metallurgy. It includes some 31 different significant geosites, mostly related to rock formations, colonial era architecture sites, and natural phenomena. But people today visit for the landscapes, the cloud forests, and the dramatic differences in climate, precipitation, and cloud cover.
The name "Omitlán" can be translated from the Nahuatl to mean simply "place of two." The "de Juárez" honorific was added after the death of President Benito Juárez.
The town itself is welcoming and, on weekends, crowded with local merchants, farmers, and shoppers. No matter when you visit, it\'s an exciting and magical kind of place, teeming with ruddy and authentic culture, arts, and food.
