Mercado Hidalgo

The primary source for authentic cooking, artisan works, and more, just off the square in Papantla.

Mercado Hidalgo

The Mercado Municipal de Miguel Hidalgo is one of the main cultural and commercial centers in Papantla. The town, known nationwide for the acrobatic flyers, hosts a wonderful historic center for strolling and sight-seeing.

The public market should be a main stop on any such outing. Of course, the market acts as the center of much of the area’s cultural life.

The market’s triangular plan starts at the northwest corner of the town’s main square, the Parque Central Israel C. Tellez, also called the Parque del Kiosko.

The main entrance to the market is here on the upper levels at the famous Papantla Fountain. The inclination means the far side of the triangle is a full two stories below. Inside, you’ll find all manner of vendors from butchers to merchants in produce and dry goods. The market places a special emphasis on the variety of artisan goods that come from all over the state and the region.

The market is also home to a good number of eateries, including a few that could count as full-on restaurants. These are always going to offer some of the best options for breakfast and lunch.

In some sense, due to the central location, the market also serves as a visitor reception area. Many of the workers are uniformed on most days and this seems to add to the overall festive air of the place.

Just inside the main entrance, some of Papantla’s most famous cooks serve tamales and molotes (similar to empanadas) nearly every day. A blue corn atole called “moradito” is another local favorite.

The Mercado is a vital part of Papantla’s historic center. If you’ve never been to a Mexican public market, it’s a traditional and eye-opening experience. Whether you’re just wandering the aisles or shopping for something special, it’s a must-stop and even an essential glimpse into the spirit of the community.
