Sierra de Órganos National Park

One of the most extraordinary and uplifting desert environments in the world, with something for everyone and a vibration that eventually gets into your bones and elevates your very sense of being.

Sierra de Órganos National Park

Sierra de Órganos National Park, is a beloved and rather famous national park and protected area high in the western mountains of Zacatecas nearly on the border with Durango. People come for the hiking, mountain biking, and, perhaps most obviously, for the rock climbing, but more than anything it's a place a staggering, jaw dropping landscapes and awe-inspiring geology!

The name, of course, comes from the resemblance of all of these rock formations to a great and terrible cathedral pipe organ. The park has been used as a set for more western cowboy movies than can be listed here. It's an excellent place for nature lovers, (more than 240 species) and many are endemic and some are endangered. Peregrine falcons, little cacomixtle, the ring-tailed mix between a cat and a raccoon, and the beautiful northern fox.

The parks setting and semi-arid climate make it an extraordinary getaway. The park entrance is some 24 km from Sombrerete the already magical town. You start to get the idea that this is inspired, vibrant, and enchanted country.

Lots of people will come in just for a day, or for the afternoon. In fact, there are designated campsites for those who want to take in the sunrise, or the sunset. It's remarkable to say the very least. There are also limited cabin rentals as well as a visitor center with restrooms. The little town of San Francisco de Órganos is 6 kms away from the park entrance with limited services and food.

The vast majority of visitors will come in to the Sierra de Órganos National Park from nearby Sombrerete or from Victoria de Durango. Tour groups are often organized from there to make the trip of about 90 minutes. From the Zacatecas capital region, the trip is normally closer to three hours.

Park hours: Daily, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
