Costa Grande Archaeological Museum

A tiny museum worthy of the city of Zihuatenejo, and its cool history and collections.

Costa Grande Archaeological Museum

The Costa Grande Archaeological Museum is directly on the Paseo del Pescador, facing the Olof Palme Plaza at the foot of the bridge spanning the Boquita Canal. A small museum, it captures just the beginnings of the story of the Costa Grande and the long history of this part of Guerrero.

The collection includes pottery, clay figures, obsidian tools and weapons, and objects reflecting the influences of Olmec, Teotihuacan, Triple Alliance and Tarascan cultures. The building dates from 1947, with stone columns and a tile roof. The museum makes a great place to cool off and relax, especially during the height of the Zihuatenejo beach and party scene.

The museum is organized into six exhibition galleries:

1. Introduction to Archaeology
2. Physiography of the Costa Grande
3. Life in village communities
4. Ceremonial centers
5.Province of Cihuatlan
6. Colonial times.

In perhaps the most desirable spot in the historic center of old Zihuatenejo, the archaeological museum is great place for families, or anyone who has already had enough fun in the sun. The Plaza del Artista, just about directly west of the Museum, constitutes the end to the Calle Vicente Guerrero. The little plaza is given over to frequent exhibitions and sales of the works of artists from all around the region.
