Tepozteco

The magical pyramid high above already magical Tepoztlán is an essential part of any visit.

Tepozteco

The Tepozteco Archaeological Zone is just up over the mountain ridge from Tepoztlán. The ruins here were an important ceremonial site dedicated to the god Tepoztécatl associated with pulque and fertility. With knockout views and architecture, reflects the influence of the Mexica cultures and their connection with the natural elements such as the wind and the moon.

The site dates from the mid-Post-Classical Period. It consistes of numerous terraces and a small pyramid. These were constucted high above one of the peaks of the Sierra de Tepoztlan, easily overlooking the town below. The temple at one point was attracting pilgrims from as far away as Guatemala, although the cult of Tepoztecatl was local to this site.

The site is within the Tepozteco National Park and for many visitors it will constitute the only part of the park to be visited. The park is part of the enormous Chichinautzin Biological Corridor that protects much of the south of Mexico City and this part of Morelos.

The park is a fascinating and unique protected environment. But here, forces are said to come together, and magnetic aspects of the mountains themselves are said to interact with the consciousness of visitors. That makes it a must-visit and even an essential part of most peoples' visits to Tepoztlán.

From the center of the small town, a taxi ride can take you part of the way. Most locals will insist that the roughly 30 minute climb on foot is an essential part of the visit.
