Zipolite is a dreamy beach town, one of the only clothing-optional beaches in Mexico, and a very important LGBT+ site on the Mexican coast. It\'s probably second only to Puerta Vallarta in terms of importance to the LGBT+ community. The Zapotec name actually means beach of the dead, but what could be more popular in Mexico? And popular it is. The town is right down the coast from Mazunte. And roughly right in between the aiports at Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, Zipolite is about an hour from either airport.
The town itself is as Bohemian as it gets. And hotel and hospitality workers have upped their ante as more an more guests have arrived. The town is still popular with surfers, but there are plenty of little inlets and quiet places for those who won\'t venture into the open ocean.
The namesake Playa Zipolite is about 1.5 kms along the main stretch of town. Visitors take off for Pochutla for diving and hiking although offshore you may well catch sight of the whales, dolphins, and even orcas. The Playa del Amor is a favorite for sunsets.
The main drag is called Roca Blanca, and restaurants and night-spots are usually filled up, especially on weekends.
For those arriving by bus, transfers are usually necessary in San Antonio or Pochutla. The trip from the state capital takes a little over 5 hours. Taxis and combis in San Antonio make the remainder of the trip in a few minutes. Visitors also make the trip from Puerto Escondido in just a little more than an hour.
