Cuenta con más de 500 años de historia. Fundado por Don Vasco de Quiroga para ser el centro político y religioso de la región. Él erigió la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud y fundó la primera universidad de México, el Colegio de San Nicolás, hoy Museo de Artes e Industrias Populares.

La ciudad fungió como la capital de Michoacán en dos ocasiones, una en 1865 y la otra en 1915. Tacámbaro es considerada como “Ciudad heroica”, debido a que el 11 de abril de 1865, las fuerzas del general Nicolás de Régules vencieron a los soldados belgas, quienes llegaron para reforzar al ejército de Francia.

The Casa Azul was built in 1904 by Frida Kahlo\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s father, Guillermo Kahlo, in the neighborhood of Coyoacán, which at that time was still a separate town from Mexico City. Frida was born in this house on July 6, 1907, and throughout her life she returned to it at different stages, especially after her streetcar accident in 1925, which profoundly marked her health and her work. It was in this house where she developed much of her artistic work and where she lived intensely her relationship with Diego Rivera, whom she married in 1929.
