Itinerary Rutas del Aficionado 2026: Veracruz

Veracruz for Travelers

There's a little time for everything when you're starting off close to the very best of Veracruz, with a deep dive into the region's most fascinating and accessible sites.

Day 1: Puerto Veracruz

The Puerto Veracruz is one of the most fascinating and vibrant cities on the very long Gulf Coast of Mexico. We'll set off for the Puerto from the Mexico City International Airport. Your welcome will include marimbas in the night, plus plenty of time for rest and orientation.

It's a big city famous for atmosphere, music and of course, a cuisine that visitors never forget. You'll get some of each, and time and space to settle in.

Day 2: Archaeology and History Day

Your Day Two is a magnificent journey into the deep past. Set off for Quiahuiztlán just an hour to the north. Right on the coast, there's time for a long walk and some reflection and all in the shadow of the spectacular Cerro de los Metates. From there, we'll head back to fantastic Cempoala. It was one of the most important ancient settlements, and stayed that way right up to the arrival of the Spanish in 1519.

But that story needs to be explored all on its own, and we'll do just that in La Antiguaone of the most important early settlements for the Spanish invaders. You get a long lazy walk along the banks of the river and a tour of the little city that was founded to be the original Veracruz. There's even time for a work shop with the town's famous water lilies, and all before we get back to fantastic Veracruz.

Day 3: Mandinga!

Day three is devoted to cuisine with a little history too. We'll start with a more complete tour of the Veracruz city center streets. That means, you can't miss a trip out to the San Juan de Ulúa fortress. We'll set off for there for the famous Mandinga lagoon by boat.

Lunchtime means arroz a la tumbada and you deserve a full explanation before we dig in. It's a memorable lunch and it's still practically within the city of Veracruz, so that means there's time for exploring a little in the Huaca neighborhood where jarocho dancing is the very height of an evening well spent.

Day 4: Chachalacas and more!

Veracruz is a still, first and foremost, a seaside town. There's no better place to get up close and personal than at the Chachalacas beach. We'll set off on an ATV tour across the local dunes before setting off for Boca del Río. You get a culinary tour with plenty of time to eat and some time to rest too.

From there, we're heading to Antón Lizardo to get on a boat bund for the Isla Enmedio. Why not spend half the day on a fantastic tropical island?

Before we get back, we'll share plenty of time for exploring, R&R and just enjoying, and it's only back to Veracruz when the sun has already set.

Day 5: Bon Voyage

Depending on your flight time, there may still be time for some morning adventure, last minute shopping or catching up on what you may have missed.

Getting back to the hotel, we'll get you off to the Veracruz airport and all with plenty of time to still enjoy.
