Telchac Puerto

A fantastic stretch of Caribbean beachfront, a few white clouds, and every dream alight with hours to go before you sleep and nothing but the whisper of the sea.

Telchac Puerto

Telchac Puerto is a little beachfront community and fishing village on the magnificent coast of Yucatan. A sometime getaway for residents of the capital at Merida, it's the perfect weekend away, and a beach haunt that lives on long after more heavily visited places succumb to crowding and holiday malaise.

Telchac is named for the "essential rain" that the ancient Maya expected to fall here. That's said, most years see it graced by far more sunny days than cloudy. The town is a straight 30-minute drive from Motul and thus very close to the pink lagoons and ancient Xtambo ruins at XtampĂș.

Today's visitors go in for the incredible bird watching there and in the UaymitĂșn sanctuary for the legendary pink flamingos. There are many. But more than anything, visitors come to stroll the sandy streets, and the pristine beaches.

The town is not often crowded with visitors, although having you in is today a bigger part of the local economy than at any point in the past. For that, there's no shortage of places to stay, from the posh and sophisticated, to clean places for the budget traveler. And wandering the white sand streets or hopping a mototaxi make it an exciting, laid back, peaceful calm place to stay and be thankful you got here. You won't regret it.

Most visitors still arrive from Merida, and Noreste Yucatån runs some five direct buses a day from there. The trip takes a little more than an hour.  From the Tren Maya station at Tixkokob, the trip can be a little shorter. Autocentro and Noreste may want to route you through Merida though so you'll want to be sure to check the bus route first.
