Cazones de Herrera

Between rivers, sea and mangroves, a natural refuge of the Veracruzan Huasteca (Huasteca Veracruzana)

Barra de Cazones: the best kept secret of the Gulfo de Mexico

In the northern portion of Veracruz, within the Huasteca region, is located Cazones de Herrera, a municipality of unique beauty that preserves the charm of life by the sea.

Its name comes from the abundance of "cazones", small sharks that gave identity to this fishing coast and its main attraction: the Barra de Cazones, one of the most paradisiacal destinations in the Gulf of Mexico.

In this quiet corner, the visitor can enjoy almost virgin beaches such as Playa Gaviotas (to the north) and Playa Cangrejos (to the south), as well as Playa Azul, Boquitas and Chaparrales, ideal for swimming, relaxing or practicing activities such as kayaking, fishing and snorkeling.

Very close, the cliffs of Marco Antonio Muñoz rise up to 20 meters above the sea, offering spectacular views that invite you to capture the landscape in an unforgettable postcard.

The Cazones River (río cazones) meanders towards the sea surrounded by lush mangroves, home to migratory birds and reptiles.

Boat or kayak rides allow you to enter these ecosystems and admire the biodiversity that characterizes the region.

Halfway through the tour, you can visit El Farallón Island, an islet that emerges in the middle of the river, surrounded by vegetation and calm.

Another place that captivates curiosity is the Octopus Cave, a natural cavity that receives the waves of the sea and protects the petrified figure of an octopus, wrapped in local legends.

In the heart of the town, the cobbled streets and brightly colored houses reflect the simple and cheerful life of its inhabitants.

The local cuisine is an unmissable experience: ceviches, fried fish, garlic shrimp, seafood tamales and fresh fish tacos make up a sample of the flavor of the Gulf.

The family dining rooms and inns, facing the sea, offer the perfect pretext to enjoy a golden sunset accompanied by a salt breeze.

On your next visit we propose the following route: from Poza Rica, take the Poza Rica-Tihuatlán road and continue along the branch towards Cazones de Herrera (approximately 40 km, 50 minutes away).

If you come from Veracruz, take the federal highway 180 to the north; when you reach Poza Rica, follow the signposted detour towards Cazones. The journey is comfortable, surrounded by tropical landscapes that anticipate the calm of the sea.
