Ayahualulco
Mountains, culture and adventure in the Sierra Madre Oriental
Ayahualulco is a municipality located between Perote, Xico, Ixhuacán de los Reyes and the state of Veracruz, in a region where the Sierra Madre Oriental draws landscapes covered with forests and sidewalks that gradually enter the mountain. Its name comes from Nahuatl and means "round lake"; according to historians, it was one of the first Totonaca settlements in the Gulf of Mexico, which over time were transformed into popolocas and later into Mexicas.
If you travel from Xalapa you will travel about 80 kilometers between green areas, streams and roads that meander between red pines and strobe pines, characteristic trees of this temperate area and predominantly coniferous ecosystem. The municipality stands out for its natural wealth, with streams that, according to the communities, come from the Chichiquila River today called Los Pescados River and a fauna where hares, tuzas, raccoons and tlacuaches abound. The fertile land allows the cultivation of potatoes, corn and beans, fundamental activities for the family economy. Its traditions are kept alive in celebrations such as the patron saint's feast of San Juan Bautista in the town of Los Altos and the July festivities in honor of Lord Santiago, where popular dances, native dances, horse races, religious acts, cockfights, jaripeos and horseback rides are performed.Among its cultural expressions, the dances of Moros and Toriteros stand out, as well as the historical presence of El Fotín, located on Niños Héroes Avenue.
The rural roads that cross the pine and oak forests offer exceptional opportunities for recreational cycling routes and for hiking among fresh and wooded landscapes, especially in the rural areas of the municipality. The community preserves traditional crafts such as the manufacture of brooms and brushes, in addition to rustic wooden furniture that are part of its identity.Local music is accompanied by violin and guitar, and after touring its mountains you can enjoy a delicious red or white barbecue, one of the most representative dishes in the region.Ayahualulco invites you to discover the calm of its forests, the warmth of its people and the natural magic that surrounds this mountain corner of Veracruz.
