Atoyac

Where the running water is history, landscape and adventure

Rivers, tunnels and nature that tell the past

Just minutes from the city of Córdoba, Atoyac is located in the High Mountains region of Veracruz and has become an emerging destination for ecotourism and adventure travel. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word A-toya-k, meaning “where water flows,” a direct reference to the Atoyac River, the natural and symbolic heart of the municipality.

Atoyac’s landscapes are truly captivating: green canyons, lush vegetation, and flowing bodies of water create remarkable settings such as the Atoyac Waterfall, an eight-meter cascade that can be admired from historic railway tunnels now serving as natural viewpoints. Built in the late 19th century as part of the Mexican Railway, these tunnels—along with old train stations and the iconic Atoyac Bridge—offer visitors the chance to walk through a living chapter of Mexico’s history, where engineering and nature meet at every step.

Atoyac also played a significant role in national history, from the Independence era to the beginning of the Mexican Revolution, a legacy reflected in its monuments and community identity. Today, history blends seamlessly with adventure activities such as hiking through tunnels and canyons, rappelling, cave exploration, kayaking on the river, and scenic walks, suitable for all experience levels.

Local gastronomy completes the journey, featuring river prawns, seafood dishes, regional coffee, and traditional Veracruz cuisine. Atoyac is a destination to explore slowly and experience deeply—where history continues to flow, just like the river that gave it its name.
