Santiago Tuxtla

Unique pieces of the Olmec culture are kept here, such as the monumental head of more than 40 tons that adorns the main square.

Nature and living tradition

Santiago Tuxtla is one of the most picturesque and beautiful regions in the state of Veracruz.

Wrapped in natural landscapes, cultural wealth and ancestral history, this municipality stands out as a place that attracts both tourism and scientific research.

In its territory is located Tres Zapotes, an archaeological site of great importance for having been the third capital of the Cultura Olmeca and where the first Cabeza Colosal was discovered in 1862.

Today, the visitor can go through its vestiges and get closer to the origins of one of the most influential civilizations in Mesoamerica.

Another must-see point is the Museo Regional Tuxteco, located in the central park, which houses Olmec and Totonac pieces: sculptures, utensils, musical instruments, smiling figures and, especially, the imposing Cabeza de Hueyapan a twenty-ton monolith full of symbolism.

In the same park stands the famous Cabeza Olmeca, 2.7 meters high and up to 50 tons high, considered one of the most representative vestiges of the Cultura Olmeca.

The Parque de Santiago Tuxtla, the heart of the city, is surrounded by historic buildings, the central market and ancient temples that reflect the daily life of the town.

You can get to know the Reserva de la Biósfera de Los Tuxtlas, which protects more than 155,000 hectares of jungles and unique ecosystems, considered a natural laboratory of great value for conservation.

The tradition is also reflected in the crafts and local products, from the laudería to palm baskets, as well as in the music of the soneros groups that fill the streets with the rhythm of the son jarocho.

In gastronomy, unique dishes stand out such as chochos in tomachile, marquesote bread, tapite de tootes, typical coconut and peanut sweets, and the traditional antojitos of the region: garnachas, empanadas, gorditas and stuffed bananas.

Finally, the festivities bring a special charm, such as the traditional Acarreo de Niños in the Christmas season, where the streets are illuminated with music, huapangos and decorations that unite the community.

Santiago Tuxtla is a destination that combines archeology, nature and tradition, offering each visitor a unique journey through the memory and heart of Los Tuxtlas.
