Tihuatlán

Place of the divine woman and living heritage of the Huasteca Veracruzana

History, identity and tradition that transcend

Located in the north of Veracruz, very close to Poza Rica, Tihuatlán invites you to discover a destination where history and cultural identity are lived from the first moment.

To understand its essence, it is necessary to go back to its origin. Its name, coming from Nahuatl, has been interpreted as "lugar de la mujer" or "lugar de la mujer divina", a deep reference to the pre-Hispanic worldview that recognized women as a symbol of life, fertility and transformation. This meaning is still present in its identity and materializes in emblematic spaces of the municipality.

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, Tihuatlán was already a Huasteco settlement. With the passage of time, its history passed between processes of conquest, evangelization and resistance, leaving traces that today can be seen in its archaeological zone, located on the side of the road to Poza Rica.

When touring the municipality, you will find one of its most representative symbols: the Monument to the Divine Woman, an imposing obelisk that honors the meaning of its name and the ancestral vision of women as sacred figures. This space not only stands out for its dimension, but for the symbolic load that connects the past with the present.

Very close, the Mural of Identity allows you to enter the daily and cultural life of Tihuatlán. It represents elements such as the Huasteca family, music, dance, agriculture, livestock and artisanal work, especially wood carving, an activity that is an essential part of its productive and cultural identity.

Here the timber activity stands out, deeply rooted in Tihuatlán, where the transformation of wood from carpentry to furniture making is an essential part of its economy and cultural expression.

Tradition also comes to life in the Danza de la Vaca, one of the most emblematic expressions of the municipality. This ritual, which combines festive and symbolic elements, can be appreciated both in celebrations and in spaces such as the mural dedicated to this dance.

During your visit, you can also visit different points of interest such as urban sculptures, including the figure of Cristo Redentor y El  Ángel as well as spaces that protect part of its history and evolution as a community.

If you are looking to delve into his legacy, Tihuatlán also offers a direct connection with his past through his multiple archaeological pieces, where representations of deities linked to water, land and fertility stand out, reflecting the worldview of the original peoples.

Religious celebrations are an essential part of the life of the municipality. Its santo patrono, San Francisco de Asís,, presides over festivities where music, dance and community participation reinforce the sense of identity and belonging.

Tihuatlán is not only history, it is also present. It is a place where traditions continue to live, where art is expressed in its public spaces and where the Huasteca culture continues to beat in every celebration, in every craft and in every symbol.

Discovering Tihuatlán is entering a destination where the past is not left behind... walk with you.
