General Zaragoza聽is a high mountainous town deep in the south of the Nuevo Le贸n and high in the Sierra Madre. The mountains are ubiquitous, and the Cerro Viejo is visible from practically every part of the little town. Adventurers come especially for the聽El Salto and Velo de Novia waterfalls which crash some 30 meters into turquoise pools. When temperatures permit, visitors can take to these waters as to the surrounding forests and glens.聽聽
Probably most famous, the Bosques de Niebla de La Encantada (the Forests of the Enchanted Mist) is a magical ecosystem where the mist embraces the trees at dawn. Visitors discover wild orchids and the flag bird, a species endemic to the region. Mountain biking trails reward riders with breathtaking panoramic views.
But perhaps the greatest treasure of Zaragoza are in the limestone rocks and canyons. The Community Museum exhibits some of the best examples of fossils retrieved in the field, but getting out there is well worth the trouble.聽
When the sun begins to set, the Paseo de la Llorona comes to life: torches light the way as local guides narrate unique versions of this legend. The Church of San Jos茅 holds its own mystery: a Black Christ venerated every October during festivities that include tepozan dancers and drums that echo beyond the limits of the town.
The town is most famous for rainbow trout from the nearby Rio Blanco. Exotic cabuches are a type of flower, pickled and with an earthy taste.聽The local apple liqueur is distilled in copper stills according to recipes that are centuries-old and not to be missed.
