General Terán, Nuevo León

Nuevo León

General Terán

A magnificent little musical town built for the orange growing region and the tradition of dancing into the night.

General Terán

General Terán is a tiny settlement on the banks of the Pilón River in the Nuevo León citrus-growing region. The town is just a little further from Monterrey than the better-known Santiago. For that, General Terán is quieter, all the more natural and generally perfumed with the orange blossoms that perfume the surrounding orchards and fields twice each year.

Visitors flock to the town for the very setting, amidst these fields and orchards. The fantastic Sabino Gordo Park is very close, and its most famous resident is a Moctezuma Cyprus said to be a thousand years old. But the town belongs to the young. The main plaza hosts ongoing accordion and accordian based concerts, and the dancing goes onto into the night, nearly year round. In October, a full blown Accordion Festival spreads the festivities into much of the surrounding city with polka and redova and more.

General Terán is perhaps most famous for breakfasts of eggs and machaca. Tortillas are decidedly of wheat flour, rather than those of corn you\\\'ll get everywhere else. The chorizo sauce is legendary. In season, visitors can pick their own oranges, and these will fuel all manner of local workshops and cooking classes.

The town is also the center of a local weaving and textile community. Their works can be spotted at points all over the city center, especially near the Casa de las Artesanías.

Those after further adventure should head for the Presa Cerro Prieto. As a catfish lake, the presa is said to be the finest in Mexico, but people spend the day paddling kayaks or similar watercraft. It\\\'s about an hour driving south from Terán.

Transportes Frontera runs regular buses from Monterrey. The trip takes a little more than two hours. Montemorelos is a slightly larger city also on the Rio Pilón and some bus lines will only get you that far. A taxi from Montemorelos to Terán takes about 25 minutes.
