Grutas de Cacahuamilpa
One of the biggest cave systems in the world, and still growing, the whole thing is beneath a giant National Park.
The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa are a series of caves considered some of the most important and spectacular in Latin America. At about 30 minutes from Taxco toward Ixtapan de la Sal, they're a popular place to visit in the very north of Guerrero.
The caverns are among the most visited places in the area. This system of caves, and the Grutas de Carlos Pacheco system, are protected within the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park. It's one of the biggest cave systems in the world. The park is a popular destination for rock climbing, camping, and hiking. The caves themselves were once inhabited by Chontal peoples who arrived in the later part of the Olmec civilization. They used the caves for ceremonies and religious practices. Some of these artifacts, including impressive works of art, can be seen in the Palacio de Cortés in Cuernavaca.
Tours start every hour and last about two hours while covering some kilometers inside. The tours reach just 20 of the 90 salons thought to comprise the entire system. The rock formations that resulted from thousands of years of the passage of water make for a spectacular place to visit. There are also tours of the two underground rivers and the famous suspension bridge. The park makes a swimming pool available and there is a popular botanical garden that highlights the areas significant plant life.
Pullman de Morelos runs regular buses from Cuernavaca. The trip takes just about an hour. The trip from Taxco takes about half that time, and tour operators in the center of town can give you more information. During high seasons, the shuttles will leave Taxco every hour.
