Val´Quirico
A touch of Italian magic touches down in the farm fields and equestrian paddocks of old Tlaxcala. The results are nothing short of heavenly.
Val´Quirico is a modern and picturesque little town some 18 kms south of the capital of Tlaxcala. The town was built on the site of an abandoned social club and retains the important equestrian center of the former club. In horse-obsessed Tlaxcala, this is a pretty big deal and the site is increasingly important for equestrian events and competitions. Inspired by the medieval villages of Tuscany, the little town has cobblestone streets, rustic stone, and balconies replete with flowers.
The saint and martyr, Cyricus, is a dedication common especially in France and Italy although he is mostly recognized as a martyr of the eastern-rite churches. Martyred at just three years old, in about 304 CE, the saint is often mentioned in tandem with his mother, Julitta. Quirico is usually cited as a patron of family happiness, and credited with restoring sick children to health.
Val´Quirico is today an important site for the Tlaxcala gourmet scene, and for the development of contemporary Mexican fusion cuisine. A number of smaller restaurants and eateries compete for the title of Best Restaurant but the public only needs to judge by passing the many open windows. The Italian theme wafts happily from many of them.
The little town is often visited in tandem with the important archaeological sites of Xochitécatl and Cacaxtla. These are but a few minutes drive to the northwest of the town. More distant, but equally dominant on the skyline, the Malinche Volcano is nearly always visible, imposing, and often inspiring.
People arrive to Val´Quirico via the capital to the north. From Puebla, the town is only about 25 minutes drive northwest and it is only a few minutes from the important Xoxtla interchange on the Mexico City - Puebla highway. Val´Quirico is thus just about one hour, 45 minutes from the first toll booth on that highway.
