Delfinario Sonora

More than a dolphin petting zoo, it's a vital part of the state's health infrastructure for kids and a great place to interact with some of Sonora's most spectacular wildlife.

Delfinario Sonora

The Delfinario Sonora could be translated as the Sonora Dolphin Aquarium and it's easily the leading public aquarium in the state of Sonora. The center is also the most important place in the state for providing dolphin-assisted therapy for kids with various disabilities, and for working to further human-dolphin relations more generally. The center offers presentations and interactions with sea lions and dolphins every weekend and as one of the leading attractions in the area, it's only grown in importance.

The Delfinario opened in 2006 with the mission of helping kids from the area and perhaps from all over the state. Soon the services expanded to offer educational tours and dolphin interactions to anyone interested and plenty of interested visitors soon followed. Now, every year they offer 600 dolphin-assisted therapies but some 30,000 visitors show up just for the joy of meeting the dolphins and the sea lions.

The center also hosts talks, workshops, and summer camps for students at all academic levels. But the main thing to further an understanding of how important it is to care for marine mammals who, in their turn, care for us too. The center is today dedicated to physical therapy, environmental education, and to wildlife management and administration.

The Delfinario Sonora is just about exactly between San Carlos to the northwest, and Guaymas to the southeast, along the coast of the Bay of Bacochibambo. Everyone knows the place and any taxi should be able to get you there from either city. The aquarium is open to the public just on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
