Maravilla Tenejapa
An extraordinarily beautiful and exotic natural landscape within the enchanted jungles and rivers of the Lacandon and the Monte Azules Biopsphere!
Maravilla Tenejapa is a remote and sparsely populated jungle along the Santo Domingo River. Impossibly, the waterfalls are complemented by a number of ecotourism centers which shepherd the people in and out, and provides some educational and sustainability work so that those who visit will not damage the almost unspeakable beauty of the place.
The ecocenters, Las Nubes and Guacamayas in particular, constitute something of an entrance to the Lacandon Jungle. One of the most remote places in all of Mexico, the jungle straddles the border with Guatemala to the south and extends northward from here into the giant Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. An enormous protected area for wildlife and plant life, you really could not get much closer.
The area is remarkable in every sense of the word. For hiking, rafting, and exploring, there are few places like it on earth. The turquoise blue color of the water, incredible views from the overlooks and a natural spa make it something those fit and healthy enough to get here will never forget. The Las Guacamayas Ecotourism Center is a little further although transport is generally available from Las Nubes.
Las Nubes is so far off that there are a variety of accommodations, from cabin rentals to similar services. These are present in most of the surrounding towns too. People generally travel the 130 kilometers from Comitán. A new alternative route takes you 237 kms south from the Tren Maya station at Boca del Cerro. The journey is something most travelers will never forget. The distance from Palenque and the Tren Maya station there is similar, and takes about 4.5 hours driving.
