Tláhuac Heritage Route

Urban Farming Mexico City-style means a canal boat deep into the floating fields and fog-shrouded forests where visitors learn food, flowers, and farm techniques and all in the shadow of the volcanoes.

Tláhuac Heritage Route

The Tláhuac Heritage Route is a collective formed by Araceli Márquez Romo. She brings more than ten years of experience working with the Tláhuac community. The collective was formed to empower small towns, land grant areas, indigenous communities, small landowners, service providers, artisans and producers, farmers, and all those interested in promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.

Márquez greets visitors at the fountain in front of the church of San Pedro Tláhuac, basically in the historic center of the oldest part of town. The remains of an ancient Mesoamerican ball court are nearby and the . Before departing, she provides general information and historical background about Tláhuac. The tour allows participants to learn about the chinampa-floating artificial islands and the ancient farming methods based on the chinampa system.

Participants then set off to meet some of the chinampa farmers. You can learn about the processes of sowing, transplanting, and harvesting and all of that is just a prelude to eating. Atole is served before boarding the canal boats. Participants then learn how to make Mextlapique, a recipe specific to the chinampa villages of Tláhuac. Visitors can make up to 10 different recipes for sauces, ayocote beans, fruit and vegetable waters, handmade tortillas, moles, and other dishes using local crops. The traditional hot drink El Calentito and pulque can also be sampled.

Boat tours include an extensive and enlightening vision of the canals and a presentation includes information about the amphibious axolotl and the wetland ecosystem to which it is endemic.

Guests arrive to San Pedro Tláhuac from the Metro Tláhuac on Line 12 of the Mexico City Metro. The church at the center of the town is about 15 minutes in a taxi or moto-taxi traveling southeast from the station.
