Cave of the Hanging Snakes

A spectacular and unique phenomenon made all the more enticing by a welcoming community determined to protect and preserve their ancient cavern and its ingenious inhabitants.

Cave of the Hanging Snakes

Kantemó is a small town in the west of Quintana Roo all but on the very border of Yucatan. The town is ground zero for Beej Kax Ha, the Mayan language name for path, mountain, and water. A ecotourism project begun in 1999 with the express purpose of better presenting the town's singular and truly unique natural attraction.

The Cave of the Hanging Snakes is home to a great population of snakes. They are dependent upon the even larger population of bats. Every day at dusk the bats begin their nightly egress to hunt insects all over the countryside. But as they leave, the wily snakes will hang down near the cave walls and above the entrance to the cave to catch one or more unfortunate bats in mid-flight. The spectacle draws visitors from all over, and not just the macabre and the Gothic. Today, you'll find more than just snakes hanging about.

The community have maintained gardens resting areas around the entrance to the cave in order to support those who come from all over to witness the nightly event. Arturo Bayona Miramontes took  part in multiple environmental impact studies which documented bats, several species of snakes, blind aquatic fish, and the cave's numerous ancient fossils.

Today, a visit to the caves also includes a trip to the beloved Chinchan Kanab lagoon at the end of the winding jungle trails. The area's striking biodiversity and natural heritage make Kantemó a unique and uniquely curious destination. Beej Kax Ha also operates a cabin rental area and campground within Kantemó.

The Cave of the Hanging Snakes is just about 90 minutes driving west / northwest from the Tren Maya station at Felipe Carillo Puerto. Most operators will drive through Dziuché which is only a few minutes to the south of Kantemo, and a slightly larger town. It's enchanted country and that becomes all the more obvious as the sun goes down.
