The Beautiful Jungle
One of the most celebrated locally run cooperatives for visitors, for the jungle, the surrounding land, and for anybody who really wants to experience the Maya landscape and people.
Ki'ichpam K'áax is a fantastic locally-run cooperative for eco- and cultural projects in Quintana Roo. The cooperative runs a small complex some ten kilometers south of the little town of Chunhuhub on a former cattle ranch. It's fantastic country that today hosts events intended to inspire visitors with nights spend under the stars and days spent learning about the long history of the community, its people and culture. Ki'ichpam K'áax is Yucatec Maya, spoken throughout the area, for the Beautiful Jungle.
The project started in 2008, when a friend of the ranchers with his own plot nearby came up with the idea of developing ecologically sensitive activities for visitors to Chunhuhub. Although they had little experience, the project was legally registered by the middle of that same year. Today the center is known across the region for successfully hosting guests who want to harvest and cook their own fresh food which varies with the seasons of the year, from avacados in August to and other crops throughout the year.
Guests can take off for the nearby cenote, or a bit further to the Laguna Kana lake and ancient ruins. But hosts take special care to make sure that guests also have a chance to learn and experience the landscape in a supportive setting. That includes in the surrounding country, with the wildlife, in the Maya Restaurant onsite, or on the grounds of the cabins where guests can stay at night. The complex is recognized for providing comprehensive ecologically friendly tours that are sustainable in a safe, educational environment.
Most visitors will arrive to the Selva Bonita complex after the roughly one hour drive from the Tren Maya station at Felipe Carillo Puerto. The cooperative is at kilometer 87 of the Chetumal-Mérida shortcut highway, just about ten minutes to the south of Chunhuhub and they will make arrangements for trips into the town.
