Sian Ka'an

Sian Ka'an is a small local group offering tours by Maya people from the communities surrounding the giant Sian Ka'an nature reserve. They use the Arco Maya as a starting point for most of their excursions into the wetlands, the Campechen Bay and points to the south, all the way to Punta Allen, some 90 minutes to the south along the coast. The Arco itself is roughly a half-hour drive or bike ride from the center of Tulum, and about half that from the main Tulum hotel district on the coast. The arch acts as an informal northern entrance to the Biosphere Reserve. 

Today the award winning local company offers tailor made and personalized nature tours especially for the environmentally aware traveler. Groups are held to a maximum of six persons although exceptions have been made for families. Most groups head into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and many will provide access to both spectacular wildlife and the awe-inspiring Maya ruins. 

The Sian Ka'an is home to thousands of species of wildlife and it's a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's the biggest protected area on the Mexican Caribbean. Just approaching such a big area can seem daunting. But previous tours have included snorkeling trips to the coral reefs, all kinds of nature tours, tours of the ruins, plus fly fishing and sport fishing expeditions. These will cover an incredible amount of coast, but inland wetlands are on the agenda, too. 

Most visitors will want to contact the Visit Sian Ka'an via their website, but especially those who are already in Tulum or elsewhere on the Riviera Maya, as tour groups are limited and reservations are always necessary. The group can also arrange transport from most area hotels.
