Candiani Zonal Market.
The Zonal Market of Candiani is well-known for the wide variety of fresh products it offers: fruits, vegetables, legumes, meats, fish, seafood, bakery items, dairy products, as well as groceries and everyday goods. It also features food stalls serving traditional Oaxacan cuisine, where you can enjoy dishes such as moles, tlayudas, memelas, tamales, and other local specialties.
Just 15 minutes from Oaxaca’s historic downtown, on Jorge L. Tamayo Castellanos Street in the Ex-Hacienda Candiani neighborhood, you’ll find the Candiani Zonal Market. Like many of the city’s traditional markets, it traces its origins back to the mid-1970s.
This vibrant space offers much more than fresh produce and everyday goods—it’s a true cultural and culinary experience. Inside, food stalls invite you to taste some of Oaxaca’s most beloved dishes: tender barbacoa, rich black mole, crispy tlayudas, memelitas, empanadas, stuffed chiles, eggs cooked to your liking, and a variety of home-style stews and antojitos. To cool off, nothing beats a refreshing nieve tradicional or a glass of tejate, the pre-Hispanic cacao and maize drink that remains a local favorite.
Beyond food, the market is also perfect for stocking up on fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy products, and warm bread straight from the oven. You’ll also find convenience stores, shoe and clothing shops, restrooms, and a spacious parking lot—all open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
More than just a commercial center, Candiani Zonal Market has long been a social and cultural gathering place. Before the building existed, vendors set up their stalls along the neighborhood streets, filling every corner with colors, aromas, and lively sounds. In 2003, the community achieved the donation of the land where the market now stands, giving traders a permanent home. Since then, this space has proudly preserved both the tradition of local commerce and its original character.
