Punta Laguna

The Punta Laguna monkey reserve is part of the larger Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh wildlife conservation area. The larger reserve spans both sides of the Quintana Roo / Yucatan border stretching out from south of the Nuevo Xcán station on the Tren Maya. Punta Laguna is the little development on the main lake in the area where visitors take to the zip line, rent canoes, and even go in for a swim. The space is far from over-developed and that keeps the people and the wildlife happy. 

The larger preserve is operated by the Maya people of the area and this entrance to the larger sanctuary is one of the most accessible and easy to get to. It's actually been protected by the people since 1950 by the local residents and the Federal government declared it a natural protected area in 2002.

Visitors get to see just a few of the reserve's total of 5,367 hectares. But as home to spider monkeys, howler monkeys, jaguars, pumas, ocelots, white-tailed deer, and loads of birds, most of them prefer something of the solitude that the forest offers. You can expect to see some of them too. 

Eco Maya Adventures also offers space for camping, directions to local eats, and extensive tours, for photographers, night time tours, and shorter walks just to see birds and monkeys. It's a fantastic place to visit in an incredible part of the world. 

The Punta Laguna site is just about a half hour south of the Nuevo Xcán station, and a little closer, about 20 minutes to the north of Cobá. People get to Cobá traveling inland from Tulum on the coast, and those really determined to avoid roughing it will want to stay in Cobá. Accommodations there run to the rather posh when considering the wide spectrum of lodgings available.
