Tuxpan
Beaches, history and adventure in the north of Veracruz
The city of Tuxpan de Rodríguez Cano, in the north of the state of Veracruz, is a place where the river merges with the sea and history beats in every corner.
Its name comes from the Nahuatl Tochpan, which means “Lugar de Conejos”, and the addition "Rodríguez Cano" honors a distinguished Veracruz governor.
In pre-Hispanic times, the region was inhabited by Huastecos groups, who developed an important lordship based on agriculture, fishing and trade.
With the arrival of the Spaniards, Tuxpan was conquered in 1522 and became a center of Franciscan evangelization with the convent of San Francisco de Asís.
Its port, both river and sea, soon acquired commercial relevance.
During the 19th century, the heroic history of the municipality was consolidated: on May 11, 1829, its inhabitants bravely defended the city against an attempted Spanish invasion, which is why it received the title of "Heroica Tuxpan".
When you arrive, let yourself be enveloped by the tranquility of its coasts.
Enjoy the Playas Norte y Azul,, with their golden sand and gentle sea, ideal for swimming, resting or contemplating the sunsets.
Then, take the Río Tuxpan, where boat rides will take you through mangroves, islands and unique natural landscapes.
The Laguna de Tampamachoco and Isla de Enmedio are perfect natural refuges for migratory bird watching, kayaking and dolphin sighting.
These ecosystems connect you with the biodiversity of the Golfo de México and offer an adventure experience in harmony with nature.
In the heart of the city, tour the Cathedral of Our Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and admire the murals of the Municipal Palace, which narrate the history and culture of the region.
Be sure to visit the Museo de la Amistad México-Cuba, where the departure of the Granma yacht in 1956 is commemorated, an episode that lings Tuxpan with international history.
Celebrate like a place during the Carnival of Tuxpan, one of the oldest in Veracruz, full of music, comparsas and joy.
Also live the Candelaria Festival, the Sea Festival and the Tuxpeña Regional Fair, where the traditions, crafts and flavors of the sea come to life.
Tuxpan awaits you with its coastal charm, its heroic spirit and its overflowing nature.
