Tradition, history and nature in the Sierra de Veracruz
Upon your arrival in Zongolica, you will discover a destination full of history and tradition.
Founded in 1117 by Nonoalcas tribes under the name of Acalpetlayuca, this city preserves vestiges of its pre-Hispanic and colonial past.
Be sure to walk its streets to get to know the Church "El Calvario", with Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and the Parish of San Francisco de AsĂs, which houses Franciscan paintings and reliefs of great artistic value.
Then, climb the Macuilxochitl hill and contemplate the impressive sculpture of  Cristo Rey, sculpted in a quarry and transported in fragments from Tehuacån, Puebla, an icon that combines faith and landscape.
Continue your visit to the capilla de la Pérgola, dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, from where you will get panoramic views of the city and the mountains that surround it.
If adventure and nature are your thing, you can't miss the Nacimiento del RĂo Tonto, with its turquoise waters and vigorous currents ideal for a raft or kayak trip.
Also walk through El BoquerĂłn, a spectacular natural canyon with a bridge more than 100 meters high, surrounded by abundant vegetation, and enter the Cueva de las Golondrinas, where every December a traditional mass is celebrated in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Descending the trails of the mountain range, discover the Ruinas de la Ex Hacienda, vestiges of the power of the ancient caciques, and feel the strength of the Cascada de AtlahuitzĂa, which with more than 120 meters of fall and its crystal clear river offers a spectacle of water and nature.
Relax in Macuilca, a valley with pools for swimming and areas to eat and live, or venture to Coxole, a place of springs and rich biodiversity.
Finally, marvel at the Popocatl, a sinkhole with an interior waterfall where the light and steam of the water create a natural rainbow, and visit Totomochapa, where every first Friday of March the Xochitlalis is celebrated, a rite that unites indigenous and Christian beliefs in tribute to the land.
