Castillo de Teayo
Where the pre-Hispanic past comes to life between mountains and legends
In the northern area of Veracruz, within the Huasteca region (región huasteca), is Castillo de Teayo, a fascinating archaeological site and one of the most representative of ancient Mexico.
Its name comes from the Huasteco word teayo, which means "en la tortuga de piedra", evoking the shape and symbolism of its main structure.
The archaeological site stands in the center of the population of the same name and stands out for its imposing pyramid 11.3 meters high, composed of three stepped bodies that culminate in an upper platform where a ceremonial temple was built.
This monument combines Mexica, Huastec, Toltec and Mayan influences (mexicas, huastecas, toltecas y mayas), making it a unique example of Mesoamerican cultural fusion.
Its occupation dates back to the Late Postclassic, although it also preserves vestiges of previous periods.
During the rule of the Triple Alliance, Tetzapotitlan - original name of the site - had a prominent role as an economic and religious center, which boosted the production of more than 60 sculptures identified with deities and Mexica imagery.
The tour of Castillo de Teayo is an immersive experience.
From the municipal plinth and Porfirio Díaz Street you can see different perspectives of the monument, which integrates harmoniously with the urban environment.
On one side, the Museum of Sitio Castillo de Teayo exhibits archaeological pieces found in the area: human and animal figures, representations of gods and ceremonial objects that allow us to understand the life and worldview of the ancient peoples who inhabited this region.
In addition to the historical value, the place offers you the opportunity to enjoy the warm and hospitable atmosphere of its people.
Small benches and viewpoints allow you to contemplate the pyramid at sunset, when the stone acquires golden tones that seem to relive its ancestral splendor.
On your next visit we propose the following route: from Poza Rica, take the Poza Rica-Tihuatlán state road and continue to the northwest. From Tihuatlán, continue on the Tihuatlán-Castillo de Teayo road (approximately 35 km, 40 minutes away). The road is in good condition and surrounded by characteristic landscapes of the Veracruzan Huasteca.
If you come from Córdoba or Orizaba, the estimated journey is just over 4 hours, taking the Veracruz-Poza Rica highway until you reach Tihuatlán. From there, follow the detour to Castillo de Teayo, perfectly signposted and easily accessible.
